Stag revolver pistol grips - pic + question!

I recently won a couple of real stag pistol grip for my S&W revolvers on eBay. Here is pic of one pair on an N-frame .44 mag.
Both pairs of pistol grip I won are missing a little silver moon shaped piece of metal on one side. See pics below. I can see the mark where it used to be. How important is that piece? Can I use the pistol grips without it? Where could I get one to replace it?

You can pour lead or pewter in there and file it to fit. That's how a blackpowder gunsmith would remedy it.
