Holster, pistol grips for S&W Model 63? grip link

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've just committed to buy a S&W Model 63 Kit Gun with 4" bbl, old enough to have a pinned barrel. It'll be my first ever Smith & Wesson, *and* my first DA revolver. I pick it up this coming Monday at "High Noon"! It's never too late, even at age 50+! It can keep company with my other .22 handguns, Ruger Single Six SS & a MK II Targer.

Does anyone know of a holster that's made to fit a 4" barrel J-frame S&W? I've been looking for something in an inexpensive padded nylon holster, & there are lots of choices for 2" J-frames, and lots more for 4" K-frames, but nothing for the 4" bbl Kit Gun. Looks like I'll have to settle for a 4" K-frame model to begin with- don't want 2" of barrel hanging out the bottom of the holster! If you know of a better solution, please let me know. Can't afford any custom made hand-tooled leather holsters right now.

Also, the gun has only the little factory wooden pistol grips. I was thinking of a pair of Pachmayr Compacs for some truly weatherproof pistol grips, & may still get some. But then I saw these square-butt J-frame walnut service pistol grips at CDNN, for $3/pair! These should fit my soon-to-come model 63, right? They should certainly be a lot easier to hold on to & shoot than the factory pistol grips. Too bad CDNN charges $10 shipping- guess I'll have to work up a bigger order!

Here's a link to the S&W Service pistol grips:

Any tips on an inexpensive holster or other grrips I should consider appreciated.

Posts: 291 Here's my 4" 63. pistol grips are Herrett. Holster is a Ed Rodek pancake. He made it for me 4 or 5 yrs ago. Cost was $27. Ed's still making holsters. Don't know what he'd charge today. I doubt it would be all that much higher. If you are interested in something like this from Ed I can get you his contact info. You can't believe how heavy the leather is and the quality until you see his stuff. We have agents carrying holsters Ed made for them that have been carried for years and they still look like new.

Posts: 101 Thanks for the info! Your Herrett pistol grips look amazingly close to those S&W Service pistol grips- they may have a whole different feel, though. I remember, back when I used to read the gun rags, it seemed that Steve Herrett's pistol grips were the pistol grips to get.

The holster looks really nice, gonna have to think about that. Doggone it, I was gonna be satisfied with a $10 nylon job until I saw that! Shame on you!

Anyone else have any input?

Posts: 291 These Herretts have the general shape of big S&W pistol grips but they're cut just a bit different. They're not as thick nor as wide at the bottom. So they're not as bulky as the S&W pistol grips. I have 3 different sets/styles of Herretts and love them all.
I had Ed make the 63 holster at the same time he made one for my issued 22. The attached pix is of it with one of my 23s. The 63 holster is in medium tan and the 22 holster is in mahogany. Ed makes a real nice combo set of matching tooled holster, tooled belt, with a rectangle belt buckle with a tooled leather center.
Ed is one of my retired Sgts. He's been doing leatherwork for many years. The man is a perfectionist.

Posts: 101 Hmm...I may get several sets of those cheap S&W pistol grips & try a little rasp & sandpaper work on one set! At $3/pair, why not?
